Overview

Woodworker's Toolbox is an iOS app that puts 11 precision calculators and reference tools in one place for woodworkers: board feet, fractions, drill bits, Janka hardness, wood movement, a pocket hole guide, a 280-species wood database, a shrinkage chart, and more — in both imperial and metric units. Everything runs on-device, so it works fully offline in the shop, at the lumber yard, or on a job site with no signal.

The app is a one-time $9.99 purchase with no subscription, no in-app purchases, and no ads — a deliberate response to woodworkers' preference for owning their tools outright rather than renting software. That purchase includes all future updates.

Woodworker's Toolbox is built by Jeff Paquette for hobbyist and semi-professional woodworkers, furniture makers, carpenters, and students who want accurate numbers without digging through reference books or juggling browser tabs with sawdust on their hands.

What's New in v1.4

Released July 2026.

Full metric support — every calculator and reference tool now has a metric mode, with a global imperial/metric preference.
Wood species database expanded to 280 species, adding European, East African, and East Asian woods that were previously missing.
New Pocket Hole Screw Guide, which — unlike Kreg's own charts — accounts for two different workpiece thicknesses instead of assuming they match.
ISO metric screw sizes (M3–M12) added to the Screw Size Guide and Pilot Hole Size Chart.
Plywood added as a substrate option in the Pilot Hole Size Chart.

Wood Data & Sourcing

Where the numbers in the wood species database actually come from.

Hardness & movement data USDA Forest Products Laboratory
Conservation status Official CITES species lists
Supplementary species data The Wood Database

Janka hardness and shrinkage figures for North American and imported-to-the-US species come directly from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook (FPL-GTR-282) and its companion volume, Tropical Timbers of the World — public-domain US federal government publications.

Every species' CITES status — Appendix I (commercial trade banned), Appendix II (trade requires a permit), or not listed — is matched directly against the official species list published by the CITES Secretariat at cites.org. Where USDA data doesn't reach — European, East African, and East Asian species outside the US import trade — supplementary hardness figures are gathered from The Wood Database. Where a species is only documented on a Brinell or Monnin hardness scale rather than Janka, the app shows the native value and labels any Janka figure clearly as an approximation.

Sustainability ratings reflect species-level regulatory data. They are not a substitute for verifying your supplier's documentation, and actual environmental impact depends on sourcing practices.
